Hydronics utilizes the ability of liquids or vapours to transfer heat. Used for generations for central heating, hot water and steam heating are likely the most recognized application of hydronics technology. Water (treated to help prevent corrosion and freezing) is the most commonly used heat transfer medium. While hot water heating is commonly distributed to baseboard and wall-mounted heaters or radiators,
in-floor radiant systems are increasingly the system of choice in both residential and commercial settings. Hydronic systems can also distribute heat through floor joists and, although less common, even through walls and ceilings.

Advances in heating technology, very high-efficiency boilers, and superior system components have made in-floor radiant hot water heating one of the most cost-effective heating alternatives available. Today's in-floor radiant hot water heating systems achieve greater energy-efficiency than ever before and provide exceptionally quiet, clean and comfortable heating.

Hydronic systems are also considered the
preferred solution for snow melt and de-icing. In many situations, it offers the most convenient, efficient, and cost-effective solution for preventing winter snow and ice build up on: parking lots, driveways, walkways, ramps, steps, patios, roofs and gutters. Accumulated roof snow - subjected to repeated thaw and freeze cycles - can create ice dams and the formation of large icicles. While large icicles are an obvious safety hazard, ice damming can result in considerable damage to roofs and gutters and can lead to building envelope water penetration.

Every heating system has its advantages and disadvantages and Hydronic heating is no exception. Commonly sited disadvantages are that it is typically more expensive to install, not easily retrofitted, has slower response times, and (although not common) failures of embedded components can be expensive to repair. However, many decide its significant advantages outweigh any disadvantages. In-floor radiant heating is increasingly becoming the energy-efficient choice for residential and commercial heating systems.
