For many homeowners in-floor hot water radiant heat is an excellent cost-effective heating option. Owing to its superb performance, reliability, durability, and potential for significant operating cost-savings, in-floor radiant heating is becoming one of the most desirable residential heating systems.

Also offering homeowners exceptionally efficient, convenient, durable, and cost-effective snow melting and de-icing, Hydronic systems are gaining considerable ground in the residential market.

Specializing in both interior and exterior Hydronics Systems, BGS Hunt Mechanical's expert professional design, installation, and maintenance will ensure your hydronic system brings you many years of virtually trouble-free service.

Our core service area is the Pentiction, Summerland, Peachland, West Bank and Kelowna area but we accept customers anywhere in the Central-South Okanagan corridor.

COMMON HYDRONIC SYSTEMS

  • Conventional hot water baseboard and wall-mounted heaters or radiators
  • Embedded Slab: tubing or pipes are embedded in concrete during floor construction. In retrofits, the tubing can be laid over a layer of concrete and a second layer of concrete applied over the tubing (useful in unfinished basements).
  • Embedded Thin-Set: a thin specialty concrete or poured gypsum underlayment is used on top of the subfloor. This system can add 3.2cm to 3.8cm (1.25 to 1.5 inches) to floor height and is only suitable in situations where door thresholds, stair risers etc can accommodate or be adjusted to address this additional floor height. As it typically adds 5.8 kg to 8.2 kg (13 to 18 lbs) per square foot to structural dead loading, a structural engineer's services would be a necessity to ensure this system is an option in retrofits. In new construction, these height and weight requirements are not a concern as Thin-Set system floors are incorporated and engineered into the building's original design plans.
  • Above or Below Subfloor Tube & Plate Systems: these tube and heat-radiating plate systems are installed above or below the subfloor and radiate heat to flooring installed over them. Below subfloor installation has the added advantage of eliminating possible damage to tubing when wood flooring is installed over it. Damage to tubing in above-floor plate systems is not an issue when trained and experienced floor installers are used.
  • Joist Space (Suspended): tubing and reflective insulated products are installed between floor joists and radiate heat to the subfloor and flooring material above it. This system is suitable for retrofits where floor joists are already accessible in unfinished areas or are exposed during major renovations.

SNOW & ICE MANAGEMENT (SIM)

Hydronic systems are considered the preferred solution for snow melt and de-icing. In many situations, it offers the most cost-effective, convenient and efficient solution for addressing winter ice and snow build up on:
  • driveways
  • walkways
  • steps
  • patios
  • roofs
  • gutters
Ice dams and hazardous icicles that can form when accumulated roof snow undergoes recurring thaw and freeze cycles are virtually eliminated. Ice damming can result in considerable damage to roofs and gutters and lead to building water leaks. The use of salt and other environmentally unfriendly products is also largely eliminated.
Ease of installation and suitability of any Hydronic system depends on many factors including whether for new construction, renovations or a retrofit. Ensuring your heating contractor is experienced and skilled will guarantee the performance, efficiency, and lifespan of your Hydronic heating system is not compromised by inadequate design or poor workmanship.
